5 Classics I Own But Haven’t Read

I was easily influenced as a teenager, especially by my favourite TV show, Gilmore Girls. Like many girls I wanted to be Rory Gilmore, and I wanted to read books like she did. Because of that, and because I love reading and books anyway, I have quite a stack of books I haven’t even read yet. I enjoy owning many classic novels, but for one reason or another I haven’t read all of them yet. Today I thought I would share just five of them with you.

5classicsiownbuthaventreadWuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. I loved Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (though it has been about 10 years since I read it), and Wuthering Heights is just as high on lists of classic novels, but I haven’t finished reading it. I think I read 20 pages of it at one point, but got distracted by something else (probably something from the Shopaholic series). Compared to other classics, this one is quite small so it’s not as intimidating and I will hopefully have a chance to read it this year.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Now this is an intimidating one for me. I know the story well (and listen to songs from the musical almost daily), but the 1000+ page count is still a little scary for me. I like novels that I can reasonably finish in a week or two. However, I know that I will enjoy it, so I just need to read it.

5classicsihaventreadGreat Expectations by Charles Dickens. To be honest, the only book by Dickens that I’ve actually finished is A Christmas Carol. I’ve started Oliver Twist at least five times, and Great Expectations once, but like everything else on this list, I got distracted by something else.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I’m not sure that I’ve ever started this novel before, but I do know I’ve never finished Tom Sawyer (despite starting it at least ten times). For some reason when publishers do special editions of classics, they always choose Huckleberry Finn and I always want to buy them all (I think this is my only copy right now though). I need to finally read this (and Tom Sawyer), and then one day when we have twin boys, we can name them Finn and Sawyer (though I know Christopher doesn’t like the name Sawyer).

5classicsGone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Will you still be my friend if I tell you that I haven’t seen the movie either? I know, I don’t know why either. I bought this book when I was working at a book store and would buy an average of 5 books a month (or week..) and unfortunately haven’t made the time for it yet.

I’m making myself look like a lazy reader now, but I’m trying to remedy that. This will be the year that I dip my toe a little further into the pool of classic novels!

What books are sitting on your shelves waiting to be read?
